So recently Phalanx Digital participated in the PA Hack-A-Thon, Code4PA. Our goal was to just join the event and utilize government data sets to do something useful. Our team of 4 went into the event with an idea to develop a mobile app and companion Amazon Alexa app using the Parks & Recreation data set. The application would help people find parks with specific amenities to go to in the state and then organize gatherings of friends at that park via Facebook integration. With 3 weeks to design and develop we spent what little spare time we had crushing through a model for the app. We categorized amenities into interest groups to profile users and make sure that users were getting recommendations that fit what they liked to do.
By the end of the 3 day weekend we pitched the idea, got behind it and were running with it. Three weeks later our app was built using Cordova to provide a mobile app on both iOS and Android and our companion Alexa app was working and allowing users to access the data as well. In the end we won best designed application for the event and some cool swag. It was an enjoyable experience and one we look forward to next year.
Here’s some video from our presentation of the app working and the Alexa app as well. At the bottom you can find a funny Alexa App out take as well. lol
